Journalistic

Details:

In the first meeting, I got task to collect ads from newspaper or any other sources. Then in the next meeting, my friends and I discussed the ads about what the structure of an ads are. There were two kind of ads that being discussed, common ads and display ads (Ads with picture). After the discussion, the lecturer usually gave task to make an ads based on reality (real condition/in specific condition eg: you’re as a graduate from English Department, what will you “sell” from yourself.) both common and display ads.

The next material was how to make a news. At first we learned how to make a proper titled for a news. Then what the structure of a news are. For opinion and letter to editor basically almost the same with the material you get in the previous semester in writing class (Essay and analytical). We composed an exposition text and discussion text. However, this was not as easy as before. We need to give more elaboration, proves or examples and data especially for opinion. Meanwhile for letter to editor (LTE) is almost the same with opinion. In LTE, our writing can be shorter and simpler. One thing that should be remembered in writing complain letter is at least there are three parts. Background, complaint and recommendation.

For the exams, in the last month of the semester, there would be a project. We had to make bulletin(s) consist of all materials given during the semester. A week one bulletin for one month. It means that we had to make four bulletins.

Introduction to Poetry

What I remember from this class was the lecturer’s words, Poetry is an art which uses language. And more thing ART IS TRUTH AND BEAUTY. I didn’t remember whose word that is. However it was beautiful.

Anyway, I like poetry class however I got a B in my final score. I learned many things as I mention before in Story in the 4th semester note. There are many theories about poetry but what I like the most in this class was the application of the theory into the poetry.

Well, this is about poetry class, of course we read some poems. And my favorite one was After Apple Picking by Robert Frost. This poetry is about …….. (no spoiler) lol

Btw, the lecturer explain the material by making little discussion and speech. The tests were in the form of essay questions. Just find many references before exams so you can get some illumination to do your test. The good thing was the lecturer in gave the tittle of the poetry that being delineated in the test.

Introduction to American Studies

Introduction to American Studies/ Pengantar Kajian Amerika

There were many students from this class. We used seminar room for this class. And the lecturer was amazing in giving the material just like my lecturer in SKI (Sejarah Kesusastraan Inggris/ History of English Literature) in the first semester. The students held discussion and the lecturer gave additional information. Meaning that the lecturer not only checking the attendance list and making note who was asking in the discussion (such as in my American and British Society subject in 3rd semester).
Well, the exams for this class were not only in written test but also in the form of FGD (Focus/Forum –I’m not so sure- Group Discussion). The handouts for this class were two of these books. (Books in blue cover)

books that can support your study in this class

My friends group presentation

In this class you’ll get what is American studies, how to learn American studies, what topic you can take related to American studies, and many more.

Integrated English (IE)

In the first meeting, the lecturer asked about what Integrated English is and gave an overview about this subject. What the lecturer expects from this material are students able to:
  1.  Understand , compare, interpret data -> supporting data
  2. Provide information
  3.  Compare and contrast opinions and facts

Then, he gave a Pre-test. This test would not affect to our final score. The lecturer just wanted to know how far students understanding was. From the test we learned how to deliver a same idea and avoid plagiarism.

Well, in this class, the lecturer focus and reading and writing skill. The material that being discussed in the semester were many texts, charts, and critical reading and writing.

What I really learn from this class is the way how we find main idea in a text by making idea mapping. (or whatever it’s called)

Example of what I called idea maping.
In this class, we had to make video about the bad things you find living in the boarding house and living with parents. It depends on our situation. Eg. I’m living in the boarding house so I will make video related to bad things in the boarding house.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Details:
Because I was in B class so I will tell from B class student point of view.
In the first week, the lecturer gave the overview about what we would do in the semester. He also gave explanation about the scoring system. Just prepare yourself that there will be a task almost in every meeting.

In week 3, we learned the difference between report and descriptive text; and explanation and procedure text. The task for next meeting: make an exposition text.
In week 4, He explained the difference between recount and narrative text. The tasks: making recount text (due date: a week) and narrative text (due date: 2 weeks).

Week 5: there was no class at that time. (10th March 2014). Nevertheless, the task still had to be submitted.

Week 6: discussing mistakes in the recount text and giving task for first UK. The task was: conducting a small survey and making an abstract from its result.

Week 7: We had to choose a topic for our final project (for UK 3 and 4). Just choose (or find). Then class dismissed. Task for next meeting: Find a journal article.

Week 8: we learned how to summarize and paraphrase a text. Then the task for next week: make a summary from the article we find.

Week 9: practicing paraphrasing a paragraph. Then there was task for UK 2: Find another journal, select the introduction part to summarize and choose one paragraph to paraphrase.

Week 10: the lecturer explained about the final project. Making small research and presenting it in the form of journal. There would be titled, abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, discussion and conclusion. We also submitted the title that we want to discussed in our journal.

Week 11: Prof. Djat explained how to make introduction. Task for next week (for UK3): make introduction related to our topic.

Week 12: revision week and more material about literature review. Next task: make literature review.

Week 13-16: Revision week for the literature review. No formal class but consultation. In week 16 the final project should be submitted completely.

The result:
A level.

Prof. Djat never disappoint you if you do what he said well (based on his instruction).

Story in the Third Semester Materi Sastra Inggris UNS Semester 3

Kartu Rencana Studi semester 3

(Semester Sept-Febr 2014)

Anyway, here we go,…
Well, it's time for me to show my subjects in the 3rd semester. From the head department, we got 11 subjects. They were:
1. Writing III
2. Translation Theory
3. Dynamic of Indonesian Culture
4. Morphology
5. Cross Cultural Understanding
6. Book Report
7. Reading III
8. Listening III
9. Introduction to English Prose
10. Speaking III
11. Bahasa Indonesia
Each the subject has 2 points (SKS) so in general we have 22 points this semester. For some students, they can take more than 22 points but it must be no more than 24 (#one more subject only).

Writing III
In my writing class (class C), the class was handled by Mr. Dr. Tri Wiratno. In this semester we learned about anecdote, exemplum, narrative, review and news item. Fyi, Mr. TW usually would give information about the final score. He might only take the last score or the average score. He always comes in class on time but he always gives excuses to the students who come late. What I like from him is when there is nothing to be presented, he always asks the students to have Kelas Mandiri and counted as presence. (Class dismisses early)

Translation Theory
It was a big class and handled by Miss Ida Kusumadani, S.S, M.A. She does not only give knowledge about the materials but also gives inspirational story about honesty or life. In her class you will learn about Terminologies in translation, Equivalent and non-equivalent at word level/above, translation methods, strategies, and techniques, and problems related to culture and languages.
Some tips during exam in her class:
a. Give full attention to the instruction from her.
b. No cheating
c. If she said no communication, she really means it. Although you only nod to your friends it means you get 0 in your test.
d. Be good

Dynamic of Indonesian Culture
A big class handled by Mr. Sri Agus. It is kind of a boring class because of the way how the lecturer teaches not the materials. The test is joking, #how many statue are built in the first yard of Prambanan statue. But in the end special thanks for Pak Sri Agus. :) In this class we learn about culture in Indonesia since pre-history period untill now. He also tell us about batik, Hindus’ and Buddhist’ candi (statue), Ken Arok who fall inlove with Ken Dedes because of her calves and puppets. ED 12 gives an Iconic word for his class; it is PHALLUS, because he ever says that word continuously in 2 meetings. The little problem is the meaning of that word.

Morphology
Morphology is a big class. It is handled by Mr. Drs. Agus Hari W, M.A,Ph.D. In morphology class you will learn about lexeme, morpheme, and word formations.
There will be 3 tests and 1 task in the end of the semester. He has the same method like in the previous class  (Phonology class).

Cross Cultural Understanding
At first I liked joining this class because of the subjects. I learn anything in this class, such as social norms, taboo, faux pass, social stigma, scape goat, shame, narcissism, international etiquettes, cultural shock, and the last is globalization: Survival skill. Unfortunately the condition of the class is not so supportive, due to so many students, not all the students are pay attention, and the worst I have to finish my undone task #reading. Okay, this is my problem and I have strong reasons why I did such a thing. The first is that the lecturer (Drs. Hendarto Raharjo,M.A) only read the material from the book which is compiled by him from WIKIPEDIA (we have to buy the book IDR 30.000,-) and I think I can learn the materials by myself in my boarding house which is more convenience for studying. The second reason is the condition of the class is not so supportive. The class is so crowded and the air is so hot. Just imagine a class for more than 70 students without air conditioner and only 2 fans provided. So I just love the subject.

Book Report
(Oh my goodness, I love this subject) In this class you will have a small class. It’s only more/less 15 students. I was in class D and the lecturer is Miss Dra. Nani Sukarni, M.S. Not all English department students in different university has this subject. I have friend who studied in State University in Surabaya (He is English student as well) but he did not get this kind of subject. Then I ask another friend, who had ever studied in USA when he was in high school, he got Book Report at that time. So I can conclude that as an English department student I think it is necessary to learn Book Report. In this subject we will discuss about literary works specially Prose. We think about the theme why the theme is bla bla bla, the characters in the novels and so on. From some movies that I have watched such as The Perks of Being A Wallflower and Bad Teacher (don’t be negative thinking), there was a subject at the school in the movie which learn about novel in English class. So, I think for students who learn English as foreign language, learning book report is really something.

Reading III
Small class, I am in B class. The lecturer is Miss Justine Niken, S.S, M.A. She graduated her master degree in Literature in UGM. She is a talk active lecturer, may be because she is still young, and if I'm not mistaken this is (2013) her second year becoming a lecturer. I think all my friends like joining her class. Although it is reading class but no boring at all because almost in every discussion she brought us in the other topics which were up to date, so we just followed her and suddenly time was up. lol. Anyway we learned about the same genre as mentioned in writing class, except news item.

Listening III
This is the next level of listening class. Just be ready with different difficulties. Tbh, Mr. Agus Dwi P, S.S., M.CALL gives us (the C class) 9 tasks and those tasks can improve your test score in the future.

Introduction to English Prose
In this subject you'll get many terminologies in prose. Such as deathtrap plot, characters, author surrogate, stream of consciousness, picaresque novel, hoax, false documents, etc. What makes it worst is the lecturer is the same as CCU’s. We have to buy a book compiled by him from WIKIPEDIA and the price is IDR 30.000,- Mr. Hendarto, which is graduated from America, is not that bad, tbh he is good for some students. He ever give one of my friend (I think he is the one and only who gets) A score in this subject. So, for you who will take this subject still have a (little) chance to get an A.

Speaking III
Miss Karunia Purna K, S.S., M.si handles the speaking class B. This class is bigger than the previous class because for this semester there were only 2 classes. With Ms Nia, we learn how to be in seminar, panel discussion, presentation and debate. I like the way how she taught us. She is so cheerful. lol

Bahasa Indonesia
The materials for this class are about the Language itself but these materials are very useful to support our task in making review text. In the test, Ms Dra. Hesti Widyastuti, M.Hum always gives instruction to make an essay at least 8 paragraphs. Prepare yourself for this...

Note:
I took 1 more subject in my third semester. I took Pranata Masyarakat Inggris dan Amerika. Advice from me, don’t take this subject!!! You need background knowledge from Introduction to American Studies which you will get in the fourth semester.

That's my story in my third semester. Sorry for the short explanation. If you have question(s) just comment or contact me in my social media accounts. :)

Music Video Review “Best Song Ever”

http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQktU8ik7xJdaiIG72aAmRa8wHqqnH7oKUxY9pe3ofCjNk5Wq1R

Best Song Ever is the lead single for “Midnight Memories”, the third album of British boy band, One Direction. This song was released on July 22, 2013.1 Best Song Ever also as the soundtrack of “This Is Us” movie.

Best Song Ever is written by Wayne Hector, John Ryan, Julian Bunetta and Ed Drewett. This song runs for 3 minutes and 21 seconds but in the music video, it runs for over six minutes long.2

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSTS--zo9YDKydmP0qDPS4hk4Nxb8xSQrqPUc7w2bNhMbTEfwY05g

The music video of Best Song Ever was made at The Temple House in Miami Beach, Florida. All the five members of the band are included on the music video. The first appearance is Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson as Harvey and Johnny. They are as two executives in an office in Hollywood who are talking about new movie project. Then Zayn Malik as a sexy female assistant named Veronica comes to the office and tells that the actors (One Direction) for the new movie project have come. Harry Styles as Marcel, a marketing guy, introduces Leeroy, a choreographer performed by Liam Payne, who shows many funny dance moves but none of One Direction members agrees with his choreographies. After Leeroy goes out, Marcel shows pictures of the boys with various costumes for their performances. None of the members of One Direction says yes. When Marcel is showing many pictures, the intro of the song is played.

Feeling disgusted or something, Harry starts singing with a rock style and the others ruin much stuff in the office. The song is continued by Zayn who sings softer melody and then the song goes to the refrain. Liam continues the song with funny lyrics “Said her name was Georgia Rose, and her daddy was a dentist”. After that it is time for Niall to sing before it goes to the second refrain. Louis sings softly before it goes to the third refrain. He sings in the middle of papers which make the video become more dramatic. During the third refrain all members keep ruining more stuff of the office and together with other staffs in that office, they dance with funny moves. The music video is ended by Zayn who writes “This Is Us” on a picture of them. This shows that they will never change their identity or their characters on stage. They do not wear same costumes/out fits like the other boy bands mostly do.

Best Song Ever music video is not a perfect music video. There are some weaknesses but it also has much strength. On the one hand, the weakness of this music video is in the intro of the song. It is similar to The Who’s song entitled “Baba O’rilley” which was released in 1976.3 For some people it is kind of plagiarism, but for people who do not know The Who’s song it is just fine. Click Music, a radio station in America, gave 1 and a half out of 5 because of the similarity in the intro. The second weakness is neither the lyrics nor music video theme describes that this song is best song ever. Claire Goodwin, a commentator in a website discussion, http://chezapocalypse.com/, said that it (Best Song Ever) feels a little like “to the best song ever” doesn’t quite fit into the chorus.4 This song is about someone who dances with unforgettable girl all night long. As what  Adam R. Holz wrote on his website, http://www.pluggedin.com, that best song ever is a song that a guy remembers dancing to the night he was swept off his feet by a pretty young lass at (where else?) a dance club.5

On the other hand, there are much strengths from this music video. The first is when Harry starts singing in the opening of the song, it is kind of surprise that he sings like it is a rock song, in fact the boy band is a pop band. The second, the video is a funny video with the various appearances of each member of the band. Proven by Niall and Louis as two old executives’ men, Zayn as sexy assistant, Harry as a nerdy marketing guy and Liam as a weird choreographer. The third, there is funny lyrics sung by Liam that sounds weird for a song. It is “Said her name was Georgia Rose, and her daddy was a dentist.” It sounds funny and it shows that this video is made to make people laugh. Guider Review on http://top40.about.com/od/, a website reviewer, wrote that "Best Song Ever" is designed to bring smiles to the faces of pop fans across generations.6 It based on the lyrics sung by Liam.  The last thing is the meaning or the story of the video which shows One Direction will always be themselves despite their popularity. It is shown when Leeroy demonstrates weird dance moves, Louis refuses it by saying “We never do that” and more over when Marvel shows pictures for One Direction’s styles for their live performances, Zayn denies by saying “Never in a million yes” on the opening of the video.

Although “Best Song Ever” is not “The best" song ever and there are some weaknesses, this video won a category Best Music Video of the summer in Video Music Awards (VMAs) 20137 only in one month released with over 8 millions voters. This video is also nominated for best music video on People Choice Awards 20148 which will be held in January 2014. It is recommended for everyone who wants to get inspired to show their identity without being somebody else. This video is very entertaining and interesting with additional conversation in the beginning of the video.
