Essay tentang Sastra Minoritas

Find and explain the example illustration related to Identity Plot by Amy Hungerfold: The character is at odd with the minority group of which he or she is part, as well as with majority group he or she is part” in the novel entitled The Woman Warrior.

Answer:
In the first chapter of The Woman Warrior I find the story from Maxine’s mother about her aunt in China. In this chapter Maxine indirectly delivers not only the story of her aunt but also the Chinese culture regarded to woman told by her mother. Maxine as the first generation of Chinese in America feels curious about her identity. On the one hand, her mother told her about Chinese culture and story about her aunt but the story happened at China. In fact, Maxine lived in America. On the other hand, she never knows about how china looks like and what Chinese cultures are. She has to find herself in America the place where there are so many immigrants from around the world. She was told stories about Chinese culture but in the real life she lives in the world that Chinese was the minority group and has small chance to develop their own culture.

As a member of minority group, Maxine had to negotiate between her mother’s cultural values. Moreover, as the second generation she should be able to adapt the country’s cultural values. As what she mentioned on her novel
The emigrants confused the gods by diverting their curses, misleading them with crooked streets and false names. They must try to confuse their offspring as well, who, I suppose. Threaten them in similar ways-always trying to get things straight, always trying to name the unspeakable. The Chinese I know hide their names: sojourners take new names when their lives change and guard their real names with silence. (taken from No Name Woman)
Based on that paragraph we can see that Maxine as a Chinese American confused why Chinese had to change their name. However, if we take a red line between changing a name and silence, there is a relation on those two. In this book, Maxine also tells us that in Chinese tradition, people need to keep silence in order to keep their good image. There would be a negative effect if people knew about the bad experience and notorious story of Chinese people in their home country. This is also what made Maxine’s mother asked her not to tell her father that her mother told about her aunt. This is because her father wanted to burry this story and started a new life in America. He was afraid if people knew that story it would give bad impacts to his family.
The other example with the same idea of silence is about Maxine’s friend who always keep silence in her class. Her friend was afraid that people know about her father who is a drinker and gambler. She thought that if people know about her father she would be deported from school.
Maxine as a Chinese American woman found herself difficult in adapting the culture in America. America which is dominated by White Anglo men, gives a little space for her to develop herself. This is not only because she is a Chinese but also she is a woman. Facing the discrimination toward her society, she also mentioned the story how Chinese has a legendary woman warrior known as FaMulan. But here, I do not concern on that story but more focus on the Maxine life in the Woman Warrior. As she mentioned that it is hard for her to get a good job. Even when she was at school, there is no guarantee of appreciation whether she got good or bad score.
In her place (America) she feels wrong or odd because of how the society treat her. Then she wrote the White Tiger that tells about a woman warrior from China named FaMulan. In this case, she sees that Chinese culture has a woman warrior and woman has power and ability to become a knight. Fa Mulan which is told to show the woman power role in China, is actually the weakness of woman role in China if we really understand the story. Even though FaMulan is a woman warrior, when she became a warrior she acted and pretend that she was a man. She wore a knight armed uniform when she was at the battle. It is indeed she is a strong woman but what people know is that she is a man. If Chinese people also treat woman equal as man, why FaMulan has to pretend to be a man. It shows that even in Chine woman also has less dominant role in the society.
Maxine’s mother who is actually a doctor (Shaman) in China cannot become a doctor when she is in America. Using many herbs to cure people in China does not help in America. People in America were not common with woman who has ability more than man. It made her mother only becomes a housewife after living in America. Those story shows that Maxine even in America still confused about her identity. She only knows Chinese culture from the story of her mother, in the other hand she is uncommon with the society in America which is different with the story of her mother.
In the next example, Maxine shows how her mother gives or in this case “forces” ghost druggist to do what normally Chinese druggist do to their customers by giving candy along with their drugs. It is actually a tradition of Chinese people that shows their hospitality to other people. In this narration Maxine also shows the Chinese tradition towards superstition. As stated in the chapter “A Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe”, her mother believes that the druggist who is wrong bringing a sick medicine to her house brings bad curse and it should be change with sweetness which will be get by giving candy. That is what Maxine’s mother reason to ask Maxine to go to the drugstore and ask her to ask candy from the druggist.
Maxine does not believe such a superstition. Actually she has said to her mother that there is no such curse as what she said only because of wrong druggist. She also adds that by asking candy to a druggist in the drugstore makes her become a beggar but her mother still insists her to go to the drugstore. It shows that Maxine herself feels odd with the tradition of her mother which is actually a tradition from her group as Chinese.
Based on above examples, I can conclude that The Woman Warrior is a story which shows the readers how Maxine as I in the novel adapts herself as the first generations of Chinese American who also looks for her identity whether she wants to know her original traditions (China) or the new tradition where she lives as American. In adapting her situation, Maxine does what her mother told to her. However sometimes she has the opposite argument but her mother has stronger reason. She also tried herself so hard to adapt with the society in her environment by learning English as we know that Chinese language is so different from English. Moreover, she tried to speak louder than the other Chinese girl which is well-known as very soft voice. However, the soft voice of Chinese girl is to show what Chinese American feminine is.

Sastra Inggris Semester 6 - I’M SICK OF SIX SEMESTER

Hi there, it’s been a long time I didn’t write any article. May be the explanation below will give you an enlightenment why I didn’t write a lot. Well, as usual I like writing or I’d rather call it as sharing my experience in the previous semester.
And this is my story of Semester six. And I’m sick of semester six. – I’m not serious, tho. ;)
Very well then, as you know that I take American Studies as the major that I’ve learned since semester 5, I will write about the Life of being an American studies scholar. Let me start from the subjects that my friends and I took in semester 6. Here we go:
1.     Gender (2 credits)
2.     Introduction to cultural studies (2 credits)
3.     American Miscellany (4 credits)
4.     Popular culture (2 credits)
5.     American Studies Research Methodology (4 credits)
6.     Film and Literature (2 credits)
7.     Media and Cultural studies (2 credits)

GENDER CLASS
There were two lecturers in this class, Miss Nia and Miss Sari. For the first eight meeting, the class was under Miss Nia’s hand. The rest of the meetings was handled by Miss Sari. Well, I will be honest in this blog. I liked the way Miss Nia taught us with group presentation and very thoughtful question related to gender in our daily life. One thing that I don’t really accept is the way she always gives her personal opinion that Woman is always right. Well, it is indeed she is a feminist. And some of my male friends and I kind of irritated with her words. Not in an offensive way, but we as a male kind of hard to accept that woman is always right. We need to think more carefully to decide who is wrong and wright. Well, other than that, joining her class is such as worth time to spend for me. I can understand a simple thing that I didn’t give a shit before such as gender bias. From this class I can be more tolerant with woman and I think I can be more aware on gender issues. As a male who live in patriarchal society, I think it is necessary to think that everything cannot be judged based on sex. For them who are interested in gender or sexuality issues I believe will find themselves fit in this class.
INTRODUCTION TO CULTURAL STUDIES CLASS
This class was also handled by two lecturers, Miss Nia and Miss Sari. For the first eight meeting was handled by Miss Sari and the rest was Miss Nia. Miss Nia always made a group discussion as her method of teaching. However, Miss Sari was more focus on individual participation in a class discussion. And there was always a review every meeting related to certain theory. However, I believe you will thank to her when you have a talk with sociology students. The materials that my friends and I have got so far are about social and cultural theories such as hegemony, Subject and power, postmodern etc.
AMERICAN MISCELLANY CLASS
Thanks God in this semester my friends and I got a one semester class with American lecturer. Well, as an American studies scholar, I personally have a dream to learn more about America in America or at least being taught by American lecturer. And that dream came true in this semester. Well, we had two lecturer actually in this class, Mr. Brian and Miss Rini. In this class we learned things about America. There are lots of things that we learned, that’s why there were 2 meetings every week for this subject. The materials that we learned were American exceptionalism, borders, woman and domesticity, religion, environment, diaspora, whiteness, etc.
POPULAR CULTURE CLASS
Alright, in this class I learned theories related to popular culture such as the theory from Strinaty, John Fiske, Rob Kroes and Sausurre also. From this class you will at least get a clue on how certain phenomenon becomes popular. The object that being discuss also various such as painting, film, ads, etc. You may be can take or apply one or two theories to make you popular, lol. Just kidding. Well, it was an interesting class even tough in some meetings the materials are so though.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY OF AMERICAN STUDIES CLASS
Oh my goodness. Miss Hapsari handled this class in my year. Well, it’s kind of scary because my friends and I got a kind of nightmare in the last semester in her Introduction to Media class.
Every mainstream/major in English Department gets this class. This class is actually a warming up for our final research for Sarjana degree. In this class, my friends and I always made a review for every single meeting from journals that given to us since in the second or third meeting. Just enjoy the show tho.
FILM AND LITERATURE CLASS
This class is the meeting point where American Studies scholars meet Literature scholars. Yeay… At last my class was more -let say- had more people in the classroom. Fyi, there are only six students taking American studies major, so the appearance of Literature students that are four is kind of good news for us, or personally for me. However, thanks for non-regular students who also joined us so the class was more crowded than my other classes.
You may learn the history of film, language of film and also literature in this class as long as the lecturer is still Mr. Taufiq. There will be a group discussion in this class related to literature and film theory and issue.
MEDIA AND CULTURAL IDENTITY CLASS
Media and cultural identity was one of the most interesting class in this semester. There are many thing to discuss here. It is just the matter how you can find an interesting object to discuss. The form of media is so many. You may elaborate the topic from the lecturer, Mr. Taufiq, with media you like such as newspaper, journalistic thing, TV series, music video, advertisement, and of course film. The idea of this class is actually you can reveal or at least show how certain media can bring its own identity that I might say can influence the way how people think on certain thing or idea.
NOTE:
For you who wants to take American Studies as your major, just be ready for a new culture of study. There will be reviews at least 3 written reviews every week from miss Sari. The other thing you need to prepare are 1 chapter from Miss Nia, 3 chapter from Mr. Taufiq, and also 1 chapter from Miss Rini. However, if there is a different arrangement related to lecturer, you won’t face all of those readings.
Tbh, being a university student is a challenge whether you can be a real student or not. Personally, I think that being a student means read a lot. I mean it!

How to revise during holiday

Holiday is the best time for almost all students who were busy doing their activity at school or campus. To make your holiday worthy, you can plan to have revision during your holiday. Wait, revision? During holiday? PLEASE!!!
One thing first, I know you have a long holiday that sometimes more than a month especially for university students. Two weeks or three weeks are actually enough for resting your mind and brain from school stuffs. You can also enjoy your holiday by having a trip to somewhere for 5-7 days.
And I know that maybe some of you ask, Will it work study during holiday? You’ll never know ‘till you’ve tried. J
You also may apply these tips for “general study” (study not in holiday) or before exams. So, it’s fine to keep on reading… #wink

And this is it:

HOW TO REVISE DURING HOLIDAY
STEP ONE
Make a schedule
By making a schedule means that you already have had a will to study. A will to study is the most important thing you must have. Without it you will be not serious in learning something and it will waste your time. In making schedule, you have to focus on how many days you get in your holiday. Do not force the whole holiday for study. Your holiday aims to rest your brain from school or university stuff. Just make sure that you rest your brain and mind wisely during your holiday.
Then you decide how many days for learning and enjoying your holiday.
It’s important to make details but not as details as possible. What I mean by making details is that what material you want to learn and how many hours you need for each material.

STEP TWO
Find your best place to study
Finding a comfortable place to study is not a hard thing to do. You can study in your room or terrace or your garden. Sometimes study in outdoor has different atmosphere. Make it as an alternative place if you are bored study in your room.

STEP THREE
Remove all distraction
Personally I am kind of person who can study in a silent place. However, I can still study in crowded place but it’s not really effective for me because I only get a little thing which is sometimes better than nothing.
The aim of removing all distraction is to make you more focus on what you are learning. If you are a kind of person that can study while listening to music, just do it though. However, based on research not all music genres can support your study. It says that only classic music which can improve your brain activity while study.
Internet sometimes can be a friend. In the other hand, it can be the best “evil” in distracting your focus. I’m usually distracted by social media. Then I decide to open my social media first just for five or 10 minutes to see notifications and to mute conversation. Then I close them and open google to search material that maybe unavailable in my hand book or note.

STEP FOUR
Use your curiosity as a weapon
TBH, I usually learned some materials not because I really want to know them but just to get good score. In fact, that’s not the point. The point is that you know what you have learnt. Getting a good score is just an appreciation.
So, if you really want to learn something make sure that you have “The Right Purpose”.
Study is not only killing the time by reading some school things but also knowing something.
Make sure you have curiosity while study. In bahasa Indonesia use your “KEPO” side. Use What, Why, Who, and How to learn things. When and where are just for more details information.
When you have the answer of your curiosity means that you’re not only memorizing but also understanding the material. Thus, what curiosity as a weapon means.

STEP FIVE
Do not revise too long
People usually study too much. I think it makes their study ineffective. It makes their brain work too hard. For me, to make study become effective is by giving some rest for about 15 or 20 minutes every 1 or 2 hours study. I usually use phase two (after taking break) for QnA. I can do it by myself using two sides of paper. One for question and the other for the answer. Even better doing QnA with your friends. I think it will work well to check your understanding on what you have learnt.

One thing that you have to underline is that you may be forget what you have learnt so far when you are at school. You can cheat that by having QnA every weekend or whenever you think it’s best for you to do it.

I think that’s all tips from me. I hope it can help your study problem. If you have your own style of study and it work, just do yours. However I would be glad if you can share it to me or others. J

OSMARU UNS

Well, happy reading…
Gedung Rektorat UNS.

Well, OSMARU jurusan disetiap jurusan berbeda. J

I’ve uploaded an overview of OSMARU in English Department. If you want to know that, click here.

[Not] A Story in the 4th Semester (Materi Sastra Inggris Semester 4)

Oh God, the time when I wrote this note was in the final week of the 4th semester. It means that it was almost my last moment in my second year. I had a wonderful experience during this semester especially on handling lecturers. As usual, I would gladly share my experience during my time in the 4th semester correlated with classes.
In this semester I took 11 subjects. Each of them has 2 credits (SKS), meaning that this semester I had 22 credits. There was something special in this semester. There were 4 options of classes that we can choose. We had to choose two of these options.

  • English for Business or English for Tourism
            and

  • Journalistic or Public Relation
*FYI, I chose English for Business and Journalistic class.
Meanwhile the other ninesubjects that I had to choose were:

  1. English for Academic Purposes
  2.  Integrated English
  3. Translation English to Indonesia
  4.  Syntax
  5.  Philosophy
  6. Introduction to Poetry
  7.  Introduction to American Studies
  8. Javanese Culture, and
  9.  Introduction to Drama

For instant topic of the subject, you can click on the subject to get detail information.
What I want to share here is technically based on my arrogant opinion, so don’t feel being provoked on the details I wrote :p
Here we go:

  • Journalistic
The lecturer was Mr. Agus DP. I like the way he delivered the material in my class. In journalistic class I learn many things linked to journalism such as how to present a news with journalistic style, writing opinion and letter to editor, and make real bulletin.
Details

  •  English for Academic Purposes
There were two classes, A and B. A class handled by Mr. Tri Wiratno and B class by Prof. Djatmika. We learned how to make a journal (simple research journal article).

  • Integrated English
Mr. AgusD.Priyanto handled both class A and B for this subject. Integrated English is a subject which combines students’ skill on listening, reading and writing in one class. What I love from this class was the material. Especially critical reading. I browsed about critical reading in google. The result was many university students get this kind of material in their college or university. And I feel the international standard material given to us. Hohoholol.
Details

  •  Translation English to Indonesian
There were two classes for this subject. There were Prof. Nababanin A class and Miss Fenty in B class. Yaps, we learned on how to translate English text (Source Language) into Bahasa Indonesia (Target Language).

  •  Syntax
There was only one class. “Big Class”. The lecturer was Prof. Samiati. We learned about syntax in English (the language).

  • Philosophy
One class. Mr. Mugijatna was the lecturer who handled this class. We learned about the development of knowledge from Aristotle era until postmodern era.

  • Introduction to Poetry
Only one class. I get many things from Miss Susilorini in this class. We learned all things related to poetry such as poetry definition, devices, roles, nature of poetry, language in poetry, forms and also we delineated some of literary works of famous poets such as Robert Frost and WB Yeats.
Details

  • Introduction to American Studies

Story in the Third Semester Materi Sastra Inggris UNS Semester 3

Kartu Rencana Studi semester 3

(Semester Sept-Febr 2014)

Anyway, here we go,…
Well, it's time for me to show my subjects in the 3rd semester. From the head department, we got 11 subjects. They were:
1. Writing III
2. Translation Theory
3. Dynamic of Indonesian Culture
4. Morphology
5. Cross Cultural Understanding
6. Book Report
7. Reading III
8. Listening III
9. Introduction to English Prose
10. Speaking III
11. Bahasa Indonesia
Each the subject has 2 points (SKS) so in general we have 22 points this semester. For some students, they can take more than 22 points but it must be no more than 24 (#one more subject only).

Writing III
In my writing class (class C), the class was handled by Mr. Dr. Tri Wiratno. In this semester we learned about anecdote, exemplum, narrative, review and news item. Fyi, Mr. TW usually would give information about the final score. He might only take the last score or the average score. He always comes in class on time but he always gives excuses to the students who come late. What I like from him is when there is nothing to be presented, he always asks the students to have Kelas Mandiri and counted as presence. (Class dismisses early)

Translation Theory
It was a big class and handled by Miss Ida Kusumadani, S.S, M.A. She does not only give knowledge about the materials but also gives inspirational story about honesty or life. In her class you will learn about Terminologies in translation, Equivalent and non-equivalent at word level/above, translation methods, strategies, and techniques, and problems related to culture and languages.
Some tips during exam in her class:
a. Give full attention to the instruction from her.
b. No cheating
c. If she said no communication, she really means it. Although you only nod to your friends it means you get 0 in your test.
d. Be good

Dynamic of Indonesian Culture
A big class handled by Mr. Sri Agus. It is kind of a boring class because of the way how the lecturer teaches not the materials. The test is joking, #how many statue are built in the first yard of Prambanan statue. But in the end special thanks for Pak Sri Agus. :) In this class we learn about culture in Indonesia since pre-history period untill now. He also tell us about batik, Hindus’ and Buddhist’ candi (statue), Ken Arok who fall inlove with Ken Dedes because of her calves and puppets. ED 12 gives an Iconic word for his class; it is PHALLUS, because he ever says that word continuously in 2 meetings. The little problem is the meaning of that word.

Morphology
Morphology is a big class. It is handled by Mr. Drs. Agus Hari W, M.A,Ph.D. In morphology class you will learn about lexeme, morpheme, and word formations.
There will be 3 tests and 1 task in the end of the semester. He has the same method like in the previous class  (Phonology class).

Cross Cultural Understanding
At first I liked joining this class because of the subjects. I learn anything in this class, such as social norms, taboo, faux pass, social stigma, scape goat, shame, narcissism, international etiquettes, cultural shock, and the last is globalization: Survival skill. Unfortunately the condition of the class is not so supportive, due to so many students, not all the students are pay attention, and the worst I have to finish my undone task #reading. Okay, this is my problem and I have strong reasons why I did such a thing. The first is that the lecturer (Drs. Hendarto Raharjo,M.A) only read the material from the book which is compiled by him from WIKIPEDIA (we have to buy the book IDR 30.000,-) and I think I can learn the materials by myself in my boarding house which is more convenience for studying. The second reason is the condition of the class is not so supportive. The class is so crowded and the air is so hot. Just imagine a class for more than 70 students without air conditioner and only 2 fans provided. So I just love the subject.

Book Report
(Oh my goodness, I love this subject) In this class you will have a small class. It’s only more/less 15 students. I was in class D and the lecturer is Miss Dra. Nani Sukarni, M.S. Not all English department students in different university has this subject. I have friend who studied in State University in Surabaya (He is English student as well) but he did not get this kind of subject. Then I ask another friend, who had ever studied in USA when he was in high school, he got Book Report at that time. So I can conclude that as an English department student I think it is necessary to learn Book Report. In this subject we will discuss about literary works specially Prose. We think about the theme why the theme is bla bla bla, the characters in the novels and so on. From some movies that I have watched such as The Perks of Being A Wallflower and Bad Teacher (don’t be negative thinking), there was a subject at the school in the movie which learn about novel in English class. So, I think for students who learn English as foreign language, learning book report is really something.

Reading III
Small class, I am in B class. The lecturer is Miss Justine Niken, S.S, M.A. She graduated her master degree in Literature in UGM. She is a talk active lecturer, may be because she is still young, and if I'm not mistaken this is (2013) her second year becoming a lecturer. I think all my friends like joining her class. Although it is reading class but no boring at all because almost in every discussion she brought us in the other topics which were up to date, so we just followed her and suddenly time was up. lol. Anyway we learned about the same genre as mentioned in writing class, except news item.

Listening III
This is the next level of listening class. Just be ready with different difficulties. Tbh, Mr. Agus Dwi P, S.S., M.CALL gives us (the C class) 9 tasks and those tasks can improve your test score in the future.

Introduction to English Prose
In this subject you'll get many terminologies in prose. Such as deathtrap plot, characters, author surrogate, stream of consciousness, picaresque novel, hoax, false documents, etc. What makes it worst is the lecturer is the same as CCU’s. We have to buy a book compiled by him from WIKIPEDIA and the price is IDR 30.000,- Mr. Hendarto, which is graduated from America, is not that bad, tbh he is good for some students. He ever give one of my friend (I think he is the one and only who gets) A score in this subject. So, for you who will take this subject still have a (little) chance to get an A.

Speaking III
Miss Karunia Purna K, S.S., M.si handles the speaking class B. This class is bigger than the previous class because for this semester there were only 2 classes. With Ms Nia, we learn how to be in seminar, panel discussion, presentation and debate. I like the way how she taught us. She is so cheerful. lol

Bahasa Indonesia
The materials for this class are about the Language itself but these materials are very useful to support our task in making review text. In the test, Ms Dra. Hesti Widyastuti, M.Hum always gives instruction to make an essay at least 8 paragraphs. Prepare yourself for this...

Note:
I took 1 more subject in my third semester. I took Pranata Masyarakat Inggris dan Amerika. Advice from me, don’t take this subject!!! You need background knowledge from Introduction to American Studies which you will get in the fourth semester.

That's my story in my third semester. Sorry for the short explanation. If you have question(s) just comment or contact me in my social media accounts. :)
