[Not] A Story in the 4th Semester (Materi Sastra Inggris Semester 4)

Oh God, the time when I wrote this note was in the final week of the 4th semester. It means that it was almost my last moment in my second year. I had a wonderful experience during this semester especially on handling lecturers. As usual, I would gladly share my experience during my time in the 4th semester correlated with classes.
In this semester I took 11 subjects. Each of them has 2 credits (SKS), meaning that this semester I had 22 credits. There was something special in this semester. There were 4 options of classes that we can choose. We had to choose two of these options.

  • English for Business or English for Tourism
            and

  • Journalistic or Public Relation
*FYI, I chose English for Business and Journalistic class.
Meanwhile the other ninesubjects that I had to choose were:

  1. English for Academic Purposes
  2.  Integrated English
  3. Translation English to Indonesia
  4.  Syntax
  5.  Philosophy
  6. Introduction to Poetry
  7.  Introduction to American Studies
  8. Javanese Culture, and
  9.  Introduction to Drama

For instant topic of the subject, you can click on the subject to get detail information.
What I want to share here is technically based on my arrogant opinion, so don’t feel being provoked on the details I wrote :p
Here we go:

  • Journalistic
The lecturer was Mr. Agus DP. I like the way he delivered the material in my class. In journalistic class I learn many things linked to journalism such as how to present a news with journalistic style, writing opinion and letter to editor, and make real bulletin.
Details

  •  English for Academic Purposes
There were two classes, A and B. A class handled by Mr. Tri Wiratno and B class by Prof. Djatmika. We learned how to make a journal (simple research journal article).

  • Integrated English
Mr. AgusD.Priyanto handled both class A and B for this subject. Integrated English is a subject which combines students’ skill on listening, reading and writing in one class. What I love from this class was the material. Especially critical reading. I browsed about critical reading in google. The result was many university students get this kind of material in their college or university. And I feel the international standard material given to us. Hohoholol.
Details

  •  Translation English to Indonesian

Introduction to Drama

Introduction to Drama is one of the subjects to know better about literature. For students who want to choose literature for their research have to like this subject. This subject only the introduction of the topic. There will be many other aspects to discuss related to drama in the future semester.

Well, if you do like taking note in class, introduction to drama must be your favorite class. In this class, Mr. Yusuf gave explanation using slide and additional information calmly. You can easily take note without losing information. One more thing, the lecturer was so structural in giving the material so we can follow the learning process easier.

I like reading my note from this class. It seems neat. Lol. Unfortunately, I forget to to whom I lend my note for the first exam. What is left in my note right now started from week 6 so I will give kind of summary of this class from week 6.

Oh wait, in the first exam there was only one topic. It was the history of drama and its development. The first exam was in the form of dictate (mencongak). There were 50 questions and a limit time for thinking. However, it was not so difficult if you have good skill in memorizing.

In week 6, we learned about Part of Dramatic structure especially Plot.

In week 7 and 8, we learned about characters and how characters determining plot.
My note in Intro to Drama class

In week 9 (April 10, 2014), there was second exam. The materials were only from 6 and 8 week.

In week 10-13, we still studied about element of drama, Language and Rhetoric. The other thing was the lecturer gave a drama script entitled “Sorry, Wrong Number” for homework. We needed to study the material for the next exam.

Week 14 was for the third exam. We applied all theories we got from week 6-13 to delineate the drama script.

These are some photos during Introduction to Drama class.

English for Business

I don’t really have detail for this class. I explained the material for this class clear enough in the main note about semester 4.

Maybe, I will give brief explanation about the material for the exam.

First exam: There was two job applications. We were ordered to apply on one of the applications. We had to write Application letter and resume to apply that job.

Second exam: The material was about job interview part 1.
Third exam: Job interview part 2. (Both 2nd and 3rd exam were written test)

Fourth exam: Making business presentation that include chart(s) in the presentation.
My friend was explaining a business chart in his presentation

another business presentation by another friend

Translation (English to Indonesia)

To be honest, I get nothing from this class but part of speech (that I’ve got from term I in writing I), phrase, sentence and clause. There were so many free classes. We really worked independently. In discussion class, the lecturer was as a supervisor. I think the way she taught us was quite good. In the one hand, we really worked based on our ability. In the other hand she only gave little knowledge and PHP. So many times she was late giving information that the class was free. I mean no class at that time. However, the information came to us when we had already waited for more than 30 minutes. I don’t know whether this was class leader mistake of her. I just hope that the next students don’t get the same experience as we did.

Syntax

Oh God, this was a big class. There were 85 students in one small class. Finally that’s fine after someone found a bigger room with AC in it. Yeah, not all classes in my faculty have air conditioner. Especially building one. There is only 1 big room which has AC but cannot be operated because of electricity power. Ups, sorry, OOT.

Well, in Syntax class, I learned about the definition of Syntax (of course), syntagtic devices, syntactic structure, types of relation, deep and surface structure and how to transform mental representation into surface structure. (I don’t understand the last material. I know, I was not a good student at that meeting because I only wrote the tittle in my note.)

The lecturer is a Professor which is old enough. Sometimes she forgot what she has told just right after saying it. As a student, I think there is a good thing from that. I can really pay attention to her voice. I mean her explanation. The other good thing is that she explained a material slowly. It makes the students understand easier. The best thing in this class is the lecturer always repeated the material that she has already given in the last meeting. In some cases the repetition until 2 or 3 times. Meaning that in a month (four meeting) we learned the same thing. In result, the students (must) understand the material well.

FYI, the final score is absolutely disappointing.  Many students say the final score is given randomly. Another information, one of my scores (exam 3 –there are 4 exams in one semester-) is 50. Meanwhile my friends get 100. The truth is we don’t know where the hell do the score come? We never take exam 3. #curcol
I think enough for this subject.

Philosophy

In this class we learned the definition of philosophy, Plato, Aristotle, and many other philosophers’ thought based on their era (reinaisance, modern 1 and 2, post-modern, positivism, materialism, hedonism, and many others.)

The material is so freaking much. You need to use your right-brain optimally.
The way the lecturer gave the material (tbh) was boring. As far as I remember there is no discussion in this class. However the lecturer gave the material using power point, actually the display on the slide do not show point at all. Soooooo wordy.

The good thing in this class is there are real four exams. And all the exams were multiple choice.

Journalistic

Details:

In the first meeting, I got task to collect ads from newspaper or any other sources. Then in the next meeting, my friends and I discussed the ads about what the structure of an ads are. There were two kind of ads that being discussed, common ads and display ads (Ads with picture). After the discussion, the lecturer usually gave task to make an ads based on reality (real condition/in specific condition eg: you’re as a graduate from English Department, what will you “sell” from yourself.) both common and display ads.

The next material was how to make a news. At first we learned how to make a proper titled for a news. Then what the structure of a news are. For opinion and letter to editor basically almost the same with the material you get in the previous semester in writing class (Essay and analytical). We composed an exposition text and discussion text. However, this was not as easy as before. We need to give more elaboration, proves or examples and data especially for opinion. Meanwhile for letter to editor (LTE) is almost the same with opinion. In LTE, our writing can be shorter and simpler. One thing that should be remembered in writing complain letter is at least there are three parts. Background, complaint and recommendation.

For the exams, in the last month of the semester, there would be a project. We had to make bulletin(s) consist of all materials given during the semester. A week one bulletin for one month. It means that we had to make four bulletins.

Introduction to Poetry

What I remember from this class was the lecturer’s words, Poetry is an art which uses language. And more thing ART IS TRUTH AND BEAUTY. I didn’t remember whose word that is. However it was beautiful.

Anyway, I like poetry class however I got a B in my final score. I learned many things as I mention before in Story in the 4th semester note. There are many theories about poetry but what I like the most in this class was the application of the theory into the poetry.

Well, this is about poetry class, of course we read some poems. And my favorite one was After Apple Picking by Robert Frost. This poetry is about …….. (no spoiler) lol

Btw, the lecturer explain the material by making little discussion and speech. The tests were in the form of essay questions. Just find many references before exams so you can get some illumination to do your test. The good thing was the lecturer in gave the tittle of the poetry that being delineated in the test.

Introduction to American Studies

Introduction to American Studies/ Pengantar Kajian Amerika

There were many students from this class. We used seminar room for this class. And the lecturer was amazing in giving the material just like my lecturer in SKI (Sejarah Kesusastraan Inggris/ History of English Literature) in the first semester. The students held discussion and the lecturer gave additional information. Meaning that the lecturer not only checking the attendance list and making note who was asking in the discussion (such as in my American and British Society subject in 3rd semester).
Well, the exams for this class were not only in written test but also in the form of FGD (Focus/Forum –I’m not so sure- Group Discussion). The handouts for this class were two of these books. (Books in blue cover)

books that can support your study in this class

My friends group presentation

In this class you’ll get what is American studies, how to learn American studies, what topic you can take related to American studies, and many more.

Integrated English (IE)

In the first meeting, the lecturer asked about what Integrated English is and gave an overview about this subject. What the lecturer expects from this material are students able to:
  1.  Understand , compare, interpret data -> supporting data
  2. Provide information
  3.  Compare and contrast opinions and facts

Then, he gave a Pre-test. This test would not affect to our final score. The lecturer just wanted to know how far students understanding was. From the test we learned how to deliver a same idea and avoid plagiarism.

Well, in this class, the lecturer focus and reading and writing skill. The material that being discussed in the semester were many texts, charts, and critical reading and writing.

What I really learn from this class is the way how we find main idea in a text by making idea mapping. (or whatever it’s called)

Example of what I called idea maping.
In this class, we had to make video about the bad things you find living in the boarding house and living with parents. It depends on our situation. Eg. I’m living in the boarding house so I will make video related to bad things in the boarding house.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Details:
Because I was in B class so I will tell from B class student point of view.
In the first week, the lecturer gave the overview about what we would do in the semester. He also gave explanation about the scoring system. Just prepare yourself that there will be a task almost in every meeting.

In week 3, we learned the difference between report and descriptive text; and explanation and procedure text. The task for next meeting: make an exposition text.
In week 4, He explained the difference between recount and narrative text. The tasks: making recount text (due date: a week) and narrative text (due date: 2 weeks).

Week 5: there was no class at that time. (10th March 2014). Nevertheless, the task still had to be submitted.

Week 6: discussing mistakes in the recount text and giving task for first UK. The task was: conducting a small survey and making an abstract from its result.

Week 7: We had to choose a topic for our final project (for UK 3 and 4). Just choose (or find). Then class dismissed. Task for next meeting: Find a journal article.

Week 8: we learned how to summarize and paraphrase a text. Then the task for next week: make a summary from the article we find.

Week 9: practicing paraphrasing a paragraph. Then there was task for UK 2: Find another journal, select the introduction part to summarize and choose one paragraph to paraphrase.

Week 10: the lecturer explained about the final project. Making small research and presenting it in the form of journal. There would be titled, abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, discussion and conclusion. We also submitted the title that we want to discussed in our journal.

Week 11: Prof. Djat explained how to make introduction. Task for next week (for UK3): make introduction related to our topic.

Week 12: revision week and more material about literature review. Next task: make literature review.

Week 13-16: Revision week for the literature review. No formal class but consultation. In week 16 the final project should be submitted completely.

The result:
A level.

Prof. Djat never disappoint you if you do what he said well (based on his instruction).
