A Small Project

Hi there, my English Departmet friends...
I have a project to share. This is just a simple project but I believe it will be useful for others and I will need your help to run this project. I call this project as “Mainstream Life Tweet”. This project inspired by Jammie Millis and PPE (Philosophy Politic Economy) student of Oxford University who is the founder of OXTWIT.

Aims
There are some reasons why I conduct this project. Firstly, I don’t want what happened to English Department 2012 students (didn’t get Mainstream seminar in 2014 before choosing mainstream) happens to other students from the next years. Secondly, I want to share anything about my mainstream life, but it will be better to ask friends from other majors/mainstreams to join this project.
In fact, there has been seminar mainstream for them (students of 2013, 2014, so on) but to let them know the mainstream from students’ point of view from its mainstream will give the real overview about the mainstream.

How to
1. We will use twitter to share our activities.
2. We can twit anything about our life related to our study in the mainstream we choose.
3. We need to use # (hashtag) in our twit to let people know what mainstream we are and   make them easier to find us. Because we have four mainstreams, here is the list oh hashtag that we can use:
Linguistic student: #LinguisticLife
Translation student: #TranslationLife
Literature student: #EnglitLife
American study students: #AmstudLife

If you want to participate in this small project, please like this note :)
and
If you have question I would like to answer it on the comment below. :)
Thanks

How to revise during holiday

Holiday is the best time for almost all students who were busy doing their activity at school or campus. To make your holiday worthy, you can plan to have revision during your holiday. Wait, revision? During holiday? PLEASE!!!
One thing first, I know you have a long holiday that sometimes more than a month especially for university students. Two weeks or three weeks are actually enough for resting your mind and brain from school stuffs. You can also enjoy your holiday by having a trip to somewhere for 5-7 days.
And I know that maybe some of you ask, Will it work study during holiday? You’ll never know ‘till you’ve tried. J
You also may apply these tips for “general study” (study not in holiday) or before exams. So, it’s fine to keep on reading… #wink

And this is it:

HOW TO REVISE DURING HOLIDAY
STEP ONE
Make a schedule
By making a schedule means that you already have had a will to study. A will to study is the most important thing you must have. Without it you will be not serious in learning something and it will waste your time. In making schedule, you have to focus on how many days you get in your holiday. Do not force the whole holiday for study. Your holiday aims to rest your brain from school or university stuff. Just make sure that you rest your brain and mind wisely during your holiday.
Then you decide how many days for learning and enjoying your holiday.
It’s important to make details but not as details as possible. What I mean by making details is that what material you want to learn and how many hours you need for each material.

STEP TWO
Find your best place to study
Finding a comfortable place to study is not a hard thing to do. You can study in your room or terrace or your garden. Sometimes study in outdoor has different atmosphere. Make it as an alternative place if you are bored study in your room.

STEP THREE
Remove all distraction
Personally I am kind of person who can study in a silent place. However, I can still study in crowded place but it’s not really effective for me because I only get a little thing which is sometimes better than nothing.
The aim of removing all distraction is to make you more focus on what you are learning. If you are a kind of person that can study while listening to music, just do it though. However, based on research not all music genres can support your study. It says that only classic music which can improve your brain activity while study.
Internet sometimes can be a friend. In the other hand, it can be the best “evil” in distracting your focus. I’m usually distracted by social media. Then I decide to open my social media first just for five or 10 minutes to see notifications and to mute conversation. Then I close them and open google to search material that maybe unavailable in my hand book or note.

STEP FOUR
Use your curiosity as a weapon
TBH, I usually learned some materials not because I really want to know them but just to get good score. In fact, that’s not the point. The point is that you know what you have learnt. Getting a good score is just an appreciation.
So, if you really want to learn something make sure that you have “The Right Purpose”.
Study is not only killing the time by reading some school things but also knowing something.
Make sure you have curiosity while study. In bahasa Indonesia use your “KEPO” side. Use What, Why, Who, and How to learn things. When and where are just for more details information.
When you have the answer of your curiosity means that you’re not only memorizing but also understanding the material. Thus, what curiosity as a weapon means.

STEP FIVE
Do not revise too long
People usually study too much. I think it makes their study ineffective. It makes their brain work too hard. For me, to make study become effective is by giving some rest for about 15 or 20 minutes every 1 or 2 hours study. I usually use phase two (after taking break) for QnA. I can do it by myself using two sides of paper. One for question and the other for the answer. Even better doing QnA with your friends. I think it will work well to check your understanding on what you have learnt.

One thing that you have to underline is that you may be forget what you have learnt so far when you are at school. You can cheat that by having QnA every weekend or whenever you think it’s best for you to do it.

I think that’s all tips from me. I hope it can help your study problem. If you have your own style of study and it work, just do yours. However I would be glad if you can share it to me or others. J

OSMARU SASTRA INGGRIS UNS “FICTION”

F I  C T I O N

Poster by Reindra

A year ago, my friends of ED 12 and I made an event called FICTION, students’ orientation event held by English Department student 2012 for freshmen 2013.
This note talks about FICTION and stuffs. For a better writing so I decide to write this note in Bahasa Indonesia. J
I know I know, it’s time to show how bad my English is but it will be wiser to use bahasa Indonesia. #aha
Well, setiap tahunnya Sastra Inggris UNS memiliki konsep yang berbeda-beda dalam menyambut mahasiswa barunya. Ditahun 2012 (ketika saya jadi peserta) nama acaranya adalah OFF AIR kalau nggak salah kepanjangannya (Orientation For Freshmen and Inauguration Rendezvous).
OFF AIR 2012: Parody group (My group)

Langsung saja ke topik utama yaitu FICTION, dibawah sudah saya sediakan info umum mengenai FICTION, check it out.

General info:
Name of event : FICTION (Freshmen Inauguration Ceremony through Idyllic Orientation Necessity)
Date                : 27 August – 6 October 2013
Main place      : Faculty of Letters and Visual Arts, Sebelas Maret University
Committees    : English Department students 2012
Participants     : All freshmen of English Department 2013
Concept:
1.  Pre-gathering
2. Gathering
3. Out bond
4. Inauguration night

Specific info/details:

Pre-gathering

Pada dasarnya tugasnya tidak simple, yaitu membuat backsong group, jargon group, co-card, individual book (satu mahasiswa buat satu buku), buku kelompok (satu kelompok buat 1 buku), short video dan cost play (satu kelompok diwakilkan 2 anggota biasanya cowok cewek). Dan semuanya menggunakan bahasa inggris. Iya dong, Sastra Inggris lho~
Oya, tenang saja karena deadlinenya lama. Biasanya H+7 untuk beberapa items tugas.
FYI, Pre-gath FICTION was in 27th August 2013 at faculty of Letters and Visual Arts

Gathering
DiFICTION, gathering dilaksanakan tiga (3) kali. Yang biasanya disebut dengan Gathering I, Gathering II, dan Gathering III.
FICTION: Fairy tale group in action #Gath1
FICTION: Romance group in action #Gath1
*uhummm single.
Ketika panitia dan peserta menjadi satu :3 #Gath2

FYI,
First Gathering: 10th September 2013 at Lembah teknik
Second Gathering: 20th September 2013 at GOR UNS
Third Gathering: 26th September 2013 at Lembah Teknik

Out Bond
Out bond dilaksanakan tepat sebelum malam inagurasi. Out bond disini melibatkan banyak angkatan mulai dari angakatan 2009, 2010, 2011, dan tentunya 2012 disetiap pos out bond. However it was a very big and short game. So much fun in a short time and so much laugh.
Pembina EDCOM dan peserta out bond

Baik peserta dan panitia melakukan pemanasan sebelum out bond *biar g encok* #jangan dikriiik
FYI, out bond was held in 5th October 2013 in UNS.

Inauguration night
Ini adalah malamnya para peserta OSMARU. Pada malam puncak ini, semua peserta benar-benar having fun no burden at all except for the cost players yang bertugas sebagai mc sementara sebelum pemutaran video kelompok. Acara malam inagurasi ini adalah pemutaran video yang dibuat perkelompok, acoustic performances from both ED 12 and 13, surprises from the committee (Cinderella Remix and Flasmob), dan pembagian hadiah (jadi ada nominasi yang diberikan untuk setiap grup. Eg: best backsong, best outbond group, best cost play, dll.)
That awesome night happened in 6th October 2013 at Hall 307 building I, faculty of Letters and Visual Arts, Sebelas Maret University.

Those are the description of FICTION, the welcoming event for freshers 2013. I really enjoyed the event. Moreover all my friends who could work together splendidly.
I’ve attached other photos of this event below. All the photos were taken by Sie. Documentasi, special thanks to Aldita, Fadhil and Ajik, and also the camera owners; Ira, Tinong, and Rara. J

OSMARU UNS

Well, happy reading…

Well, OSMARU jurusan disetiap jurusan berbeda. J

I’ve uploaded an overview of OSMARU in English Department. If you want to know that, click here.

[Not] A Story in the 4th Semester (Materi Sastra Inggris Semester 4)

Oh God, the time when I wrote this note was in the final week of the 4th semester. It means that it was almost my last moment in my second year. I had a wonderful experience during this semester especially on handling lecturers. As usual, I would gladly share my experience during my time in the 4th semester correlated with classes.
In this semester I took 11 subjects. Each of them has 2 credits (SKS), meaning that this semester I had 22 credits. There was something special in this semester. There were 4 options of classes that we can choose. We had to choose two of these options.

  • English for Business or English for Tourism
            and

  • Journalistic or Public Relation
*FYI, I chose English for Business and Journalistic class.
Meanwhile the other ninesubjects that I had to choose were:

  1. English for Academic Purposes
  2.  Integrated English
  3. Translation English to Indonesia
  4.  Syntax
  5.  Philosophy
  6. Introduction to Poetry
  7.  Introduction to American Studies
  8. Javanese Culture, and
  9.  Introduction to Drama

For instant topic of the subject, you can click on the subject to get detail information.
What I want to share here is technically based on my arrogant opinion, so don’t feel being provoked on the details I wrote :p
Here we go:

  • Journalistic
The lecturer was Mr. Agus DP. I like the way he delivered the material in my class. In journalistic class I learn many things linked to journalism such as how to present a news with journalistic style, writing opinion and letter to editor, and make real bulletin.
Details

  •  English for Academic Purposes
There were two classes, A and B. A class handled by Mr. Tri Wiratno and B class by Prof. Djatmika. We learned how to make a journal (simple research journal article).

  • Integrated English
Mr. AgusD.Priyanto handled both class A and B for this subject. Integrated English is a subject which combines students’ skill on listening, reading and writing in one class. What I love from this class was the material. Especially critical reading. I browsed about critical reading in google. The result was many university students get this kind of material in their college or university. And I feel the international standard material given to us. Hohoholol.
Details

  •  Translation English to Indonesian
There were two classes for this subject. There were Prof. Nababanin A class and Miss Fenty in B class. Yaps, we learned on how to translate English text (Source Language) into Bahasa Indonesia (Target Language).

  •  Syntax
There was only one class. “Big Class”. The lecturer was Prof. Samiati. We learned about syntax in English (the language).

  • Philosophy
One class. Mr. Mugijatna was the lecturer who handled this class. We learned about the development of knowledge from Aristotle era until postmodern era.

  • Introduction to Poetry
Only one class. I get many things from Miss Susilorini in this class. We learned all things related to poetry such as poetry definition, devices, roles, nature of poetry, language in poetry, forms and also we delineated some of literary works of famous poets such as Robert Frost and WB Yeats.
Details

  • Introduction to American Studies
Mr. Taufiq was the lecturer of this big class. We learned what, why Amstud? How to study Amstud.

  •  Javanese Culture
Miss Siti was the lecturer of this class. We learned many thing about Javanese culture.

  • Introduction to Drama
We learned the history and elements of drama. We also delineated a play entitled “Sorry, wrong number”
Details

  • English for Business
We learned all about business matter. However, due to the limited meetings we had (16 weeks in one term) we only learned about business letters, resume and CV, business interview and business presentation. Mr. Yusuf was the lecturer for this subject.

Introduction to Drama

Introduction to Drama is one of the subjects to know better about literature. For students who want to choose literature for their research have to like this subject. This subject only the introduction of the topic. There will be many other aspects to discuss related to drama in the future semester.

Well, if you do like taking note in class, introduction to drama must be your favorite class. In this class, Mr. Yusuf gave explanation using slide and additional information calmly. You can easily take note without losing information. One more thing, the lecturer was so structural in giving the material so we can follow the learning process easier.

I like reading my note from this class. It seems neat. Lol. Unfortunately, I forget to to whom I lend my note for the first exam. What is left in my note right now started from week 6 so I will give kind of summary of this class from week 6.

Oh wait, in the first exam there was only one topic. It was the history of drama and its development. The first exam was in the form of dictate (mencongak). There were 50 questions and a limit time for thinking. However, it was not so difficult if you have good skill in memorizing.

In week 6, we learned about Part of Dramatic structure especially Plot.

In week 7 and 8, we learned about characters and how characters determining plot.
My note in Intro to Drama class

In week 9 (April 10, 2014), there was second exam. The materials were only from 6 and 8 week.

In week 10-13, we still studied about element of drama, Language and Rhetoric. The other thing was the lecturer gave a drama script entitled “Sorry, Wrong Number” for homework. We needed to study the material for the next exam.

Week 14 was for the third exam. We applied all theories we got from week 6-13 to delineate the drama script.

These are some photos during Introduction to Drama class.

English for Business

I don’t really have detail for this class. I explained the material for this class clear enough in the main note about semester 4.

Maybe, I will give brief explanation about the material for the exam.

First exam: There was two job applications. We were ordered to apply on one of the applications. We had to write Application letter and resume to apply that job.

Second exam: The material was about job interview part 1.
Third exam: Job interview part 2. (Both 2nd and 3rd exam were written test)

Fourth exam: Making business presentation that include chart(s) in the presentation.
My friend was explaining a business chart in his presentation

another business presentation by another friend

Translation (English to Indonesia)

To be honest, I get nothing from this class but part of speech (that I’ve got from term I in writing I), phrase, sentence and clause. There were so many free classes. We really worked independently. In discussion class, the lecturer was as a supervisor. I think the way she taught us was quite good. In the one hand, we really worked based on our ability. In the other hand she only gave little knowledge and PHP. So many times she was late giving information that the class was free. I mean no class at that time. However, the information came to us when we had already waited for more than 30 minutes. I don’t know whether this was class leader mistake of her. I just hope that the next students don’t get the same experience as we did.

Syntax

Oh God, this was a big class. There were 85 students in one small class. Finally that’s fine after someone found a bigger room with AC in it. Yeah, not all classes in my faculty have air conditioner. Especially building one. There is only 1 big room which has AC but cannot be operated because of electricity power. Ups, sorry, OOT.

Well, in Syntax class, I learned about the definition of Syntax (of course), syntagtic devices, syntactic structure, types of relation, deep and surface structure and how to transform mental representation into surface structure. (I don’t understand the last material. I know, I was not a good student at that meeting because I only wrote the tittle in my note.)

The lecturer is a Professor which is old enough. Sometimes she forgot what she has told just right after saying it. As a student, I think there is a good thing from that. I can really pay attention to her voice. I mean her explanation. The other good thing is that she explained a material slowly. It makes the students understand easier. The best thing in this class is the lecturer always repeated the material that she has already given in the last meeting. In some cases the repetition until 2 or 3 times. Meaning that in a month (four meeting) we learned the same thing. In result, the students (must) understand the material well.

FYI, the final score is absolutely disappointing.  Many students say the final score is given randomly. Another information, one of my scores (exam 3 –there are 4 exams in one semester-) is 50. Meanwhile my friends get 100. The truth is we don’t know where the hell do the score come? We never take exam 3. #curcol
I think enough for this subject.

Philosophy

In this class we learned the definition of philosophy, Plato, Aristotle, and many other philosophers’ thought based on their era (reinaisance, modern 1 and 2, post-modern, positivism, materialism, hedonism, and many others.)

The material is so freaking much. You need to use your right-brain optimally.
The way the lecturer gave the material (tbh) was boring. As far as I remember there is no discussion in this class. However the lecturer gave the material using power point, actually the display on the slide do not show point at all. Soooooo wordy.

The good thing in this class is there are real four exams. And all the exams were multiple choice.
