Story in the Third Semester Materi Sastra Inggris UNS Semester 3

Kartu Rencana Studi semester 3

(Semester Sept-Febr 2014)

Anyway, here we go,…
Well, it's time for me to show my subjects in the 3rd semester. From the head department, we got 11 subjects. They were:
1. Writing III
2. Translation Theory
3. Dynamic of Indonesian Culture
4. Morphology
5. Cross Cultural Understanding
6. Book Report
7. Reading III
8. Listening III
9. Introduction to English Prose
10. Speaking III
11. Bahasa Indonesia
Each the subject has 2 points (SKS) so in general we have 22 points this semester. For some students, they can take more than 22 points but it must be no more than 24 (#one more subject only).

Writing III
In my writing class (class C), the class was handled by Mr. Dr. Tri Wiratno. In this semester we learned about anecdote, exemplum, narrative, review and news item. Fyi, Mr. TW usually would give information about the final score. He might only take the last score or the average score. He always comes in class on time but he always gives excuses to the students who come late. What I like from him is when there is nothing to be presented, he always asks the students to have Kelas Mandiri and counted as presence. (Class dismisses early)

Translation Theory
It was a big class and handled by Miss Ida Kusumadani, S.S, M.A. She does not only give knowledge about the materials but also gives inspirational story about honesty or life. In her class you will learn about Terminologies in translation, Equivalent and non-equivalent at word level/above, translation methods, strategies, and techniques, and problems related to culture and languages.
Some tips during exam in her class:
a. Give full attention to the instruction from her.
b. No cheating
c. If she said no communication, she really means it. Although you only nod to your friends it means you get 0 in your test.
d. Be good

Dynamic of Indonesian Culture
A big class handled by Mr. Sri Agus. It is kind of a boring class because of the way how the lecturer teaches not the materials. The test is joking, #how many statue are built in the first yard of Prambanan statue. But in the end special thanks for Pak Sri Agus. :) In this class we learn about culture in Indonesia since pre-history period untill now. He also tell us about batik, Hindus’ and Buddhist’ candi (statue), Ken Arok who fall inlove with Ken Dedes because of her calves and puppets. ED 12 gives an Iconic word for his class; it is PHALLUS, because he ever says that word continuously in 2 meetings. The little problem is the meaning of that word.

Morphology
Morphology is a big class. It is handled by Mr. Drs. Agus Hari W, M.A,Ph.D. In morphology class you will learn about lexeme, morpheme, and word formations.
There will be 3 tests and 1 task in the end of the semester. He has the same method like in the previous class  (Phonology class).

Cross Cultural Understanding
At first I liked joining this class because of the subjects. I learn anything in this class, such as social norms, taboo, faux pass, social stigma, scape goat, shame, narcissism, international etiquettes, cultural shock, and the last is globalization: Survival skill. Unfortunately the condition of the class is not so supportive, due to so many students, not all the students are pay attention, and the worst I have to finish my undone task #reading. Okay, this is my problem and I have strong reasons why I did such a thing. The first is that the lecturer (Drs. Hendarto Raharjo,M.A) only read the material from the book which is compiled by him from WIKIPEDIA (we have to buy the book IDR 30.000,-) and I think I can learn the materials by myself in my boarding house which is more convenience for studying. The second reason is the condition of the class is not so supportive. The class is so crowded and the air is so hot. Just imagine a class for more than 70 students without air conditioner and only 2 fans provided. So I just love the subject.

Book Report
(Oh my goodness, I love this subject) In this class you will have a small class. It’s only more/less 15 students. I was in class D and the lecturer is Miss Dra. Nani Sukarni, M.S. Not all English department students in different university has this subject. I have friend who studied in State University in Surabaya (He is English student as well) but he did not get this kind of subject. Then I ask another friend, who had ever studied in USA when he was in high school, he got Book Report at that time. So I can conclude that as an English department student I think it is necessary to learn Book Report. In this subject we will discuss about literary works specially Prose. We think about the theme why the theme is bla bla bla, the characters in the novels and so on. From some movies that I have watched such as The Perks of Being A Wallflower and Bad Teacher (don’t be negative thinking), there was a subject at the school in the movie which learn about novel in English class. So, I think for students who learn English as foreign language, learning book report is really something.

Reading III
Small class, I am in B class. The lecturer is Miss Justine Niken, S.S, M.A. She graduated her master degree in Literature in UGM. She is a talk active lecturer, may be because she is still young, and if I'm not mistaken this is (2013) her second year becoming a lecturer. I think all my friends like joining her class. Although it is reading class but no boring at all because almost in every discussion she brought us in the other topics which were up to date, so we just followed her and suddenly time was up. lol. Anyway we learned about the same genre as mentioned in writing class, except news item.

Listening III
This is the next level of listening class. Just be ready with different difficulties. Tbh, Mr. Agus Dwi P, S.S., M.CALL gives us (the C class) 9 tasks and those tasks can improve your test score in the future.

Introduction to English Prose
In this subject you'll get many terminologies in prose. Such as deathtrap plot, characters, author surrogate, stream of consciousness, picaresque novel, hoax, false documents, etc. What makes it worst is the lecturer is the same as CCU’s. We have to buy a book compiled by him from WIKIPEDIA and the price is IDR 30.000,- Mr. Hendarto, which is graduated from America, is not that bad, tbh he is good for some students. He ever give one of my friend (I think he is the one and only who gets) A score in this subject. So, for you who will take this subject still have a (little) chance to get an A.

Speaking III
Miss Karunia Purna K, S.S., M.si handles the speaking class B. This class is bigger than the previous class because for this semester there were only 2 classes. With Ms Nia, we learn how to be in seminar, panel discussion, presentation and debate. I like the way how she taught us. She is so cheerful. lol

Bahasa Indonesia
The materials for this class are about the Language itself but these materials are very useful to support our task in making review text. In the test, Ms Dra. Hesti Widyastuti, M.Hum always gives instruction to make an essay at least 8 paragraphs. Prepare yourself for this...

Note:
I took 1 more subject in my third semester. I took Pranata Masyarakat Inggris dan Amerika. Advice from me, don’t take this subject!!! You need background knowledge from Introduction to American Studies which you will get in the fourth semester.

That's my story in my third semester. Sorry for the short explanation. If you have question(s) just comment or contact me in my social media accounts. :)
